What is Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a submission grappling sport traditionally done while wearing a Gi. Here students learn discipline, respect, integrity, and being courageous in the face of adversity. Our main goal is to build children in to self-reliable, well adjusted adults. Give your kid the gift of self-defense with our Free Trial program. Our Kids BJJ classes are seperated in to 2 age groups: Ages 5-8 and Ages 9-13

Ages 5-8 is held Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5PM. This class is built around younger children, so we don’t focus too hard on technique. We want to develop our young men and women to be confident, feel comfortable on the mats, build listening skills, and enjoy the class as they learn great technique with their friends. We encourage students of all ages to compete, so please talk to you Professor Chris about how you can get your child in their first tournament!

Ages 9-13 is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6PM. This age group becomes focused on the sport itself. We look to build on their foundation and create future leaders. These students will focus intently on technique, drills, rolling, and being the best they can be every day. We highly encourage students in this age group to compete with us at local tournaments and even major events like IBJJF. The more the merrier! Speak with Professor Chris on how you can get your child from Free Trial to posing with their medals!

BJJ Comp. Team  is an additional 30 minutes at the end of the last Kids BJJ class (Tuesdays/ Thursdays). This class goes in to more advanced technique with stricter requirements on technique. Students will also roll for additional rounds as they close out the extra training. This class is completly optional, however if your child is interested in competing they will need to attend.

How does Kids BJJ benefit my child?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu will be one of the hardest sports your child participates in. This is a double edged sword, but comes with mostly good news. Defeating mentally and phsyically challenging problems, accomplishing hard earned goals, expanding what’s possible. We want every man, woman, and child to step in to our gym and feel the empowerment of what we offer. Professor Chris works tirelessly to give each student the attention they deserve every class. Grow your child and give them a gift everyone needs: self-confidence.

WARM-UPS & TECHNIQUE

Students are then paired up and will drill the technique for 5-10 minutes. This process is repeated as the instructor goes more and more in depth to the technique and adds moves or addresses small details. This is the bulk of class and usually lasts 45 minutes.

TEAM BUILDING

At the end of each class, students are given the opportunity to choose a game or another activity that incorporates team building. A favorite is Tug-o-War. After a hard class, it’s difficult to dig deep and find the energy for this game. Kids don’t seem to have a problem! Win or lose everyone gets back up and goes again. This a lot of fun for the students, but instructors always make it about your teammates.

DISCIPLINE – RESPECT – CONSISTENCY

Just like building a house, you start with a foundation. Clear away the trees and brush, level the land, and start pouring. The instructors at Team Independent want to do the same thing. Our goal is to clear away their insecurities, level their mentality on and off the mats, and above all we want them to have what it takes to approach anything life throws their way!

Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) FAQs

Where can my child take Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes in McDonough, GA?

Independent MMA & Fitness offers Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes in McDonough, Georgia. Our program helps children learn real BJJ skills while developing confidence, discipline, coordination, fitness, and respect in a structured environment.

What age can my child start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Our McDonough Kids BJJ program offers age-appropriate training for children, including classes for ages 5–8 and 9–13. Separating students by age helps coaches provide instruction and challenges appropriate for each group.

Does my child need any martial arts experience to start BJJ?

No. Beginners are welcome. Your child doesn’t need previous experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, or another martial art. Our coaches teach the fundamentals step by step so new students can learn at an appropriate pace.

Can Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu help my child deal with bullying?

BJJ can teach children practical skills for staying calm under pressure, controlling distance, escaping difficult positions, and protecting themselves. Just as importantly, good martial arts training emphasizes avoiding unnecessary conflict and using physical skills responsibly.

Will learning Jiu-Jitsu make my child more aggressive?

The goal isn’t to teach children to look for fights. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu requires patience, control, respect, and knowing when to use the skills being taught. Kids learn that being capable of defending themselves doesn’t mean they should use those skills unnecessarily.

Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu safe for kids?

Kids BJJ is taught in a structured environment with coaching and age-appropriate instruction. Students learn techniques progressively and practice with training partners under supervision. As with any physical sport, injuries are possible, which is why proper technique, controlled training, and listening to coaches are important.

My child is shy. Is Jiu-Jitsu a good activity for shy kids?

BJJ gives children opportunities to interact with coaches and training partners while working toward individual goals. Learning techniques and seeing their own improvement can give shy children opportunities to become more comfortable and confident over time.

Can a smaller child learn to defend themselves with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

One of the core ideas behind Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is learning how positioning, leverage, movement, and technique can help someone deal with a larger or stronger person. Size still matters in real physical situations, but BJJ gives children practical tools that don’t rely only on strength.

What if my child isn't very athletic?

That’s okay. Your child doesn’t need to be the fastest, strongest, or most athletic kid in the room to learn Jiu-Jitsu. BJJ gives children a chance to develop coordination, balance, movement, strength, and problem-solving skills through consistent practice.

What does my child actually learn in a Kids BJJ class?

Kids learn fundamental Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills such as movement, positioning, escapes, control, and other age-appropriate techniques. Classes also challenge students to listen, solve problems, work with training partners, and continue trying when something is difficult.

Does my child have to compete in BJJ tournaments?

No. A child can train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu without competing in tournaments. Competition can be an option for students who are interested and ready for it, but children can still learn, improve, and enjoy BJJ without competing.

What's the difference between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and karate for kids?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu primarily focuses on grappling, positional control, escapes, and submissions, with much of the training taking place on the ground. Striking-based martial arts typically place more emphasis on punches, kicks, or other standing techniques. The best choice depends on what you and your child want from martial arts training.

My child has a lot of energy. Can BJJ give them a productive outlet?

Yes. Kids BJJ gives children a structured environment where they can move, exercise, learn techniques, and work with training partners. Instead of simply telling energetic kids to sit still, class gives them something challenging and productive to focus that energy on.

Can Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu help teach discipline and focus?

BJJ requires children to listen to instructions, remember techniques, follow rules, work respectfully with partners, and keep practicing when something doesn’t work immediately. Those habits give kids regular opportunities to practice focus, patience, discipline, and perseverance.

What should my child wear to their first BJJ class?

For a first class, contact us before arriving and we’ll let you know exactly what your child should wear and whether they’ll need a Gi. We’ll also help you understand any equipment requirements so you don’t have to guess or purchase unnecessary gear.

Can my child try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu before we sign up?

Yes. New students can take advantage of our free trial at Independent MMA & Fitness of McDonough. It’s a great opportunity for your child to experience a class, meet the coaches, and see how they feel about BJJ before you decide whether to join.
