How does No-Gi BJJ benefit me?

Meet Tony! He was living a sedentary lifestyle and gaining weight fast. Diagnosed with diabetes, he knew he needed to make a change. Tony started his Journey with Team Independent through our Villa Rica location 3 years ago and never looked back. During these years he’s lost over 40 pounds, greatly increased his strength and mobility, and built friendships and bonds to last a lifetime. He claims to owe everything to “hardwork, dedication, and consistency…and a lot of jiu-jitsu”. Tony has been living a much healthier, happier lifestyle this past year and continues to achieve his fitness goals every day!

What do I do in BJJ class?

Independent MMA & Fitness of McDonough technique bjj

TECHNIQUE

The instructor will gather everyone in a circle and demonstrates the “technique of the day”. Students are then paired up and will drill the technique for 5-10 minutes. This process is repeated as the instructor goes more and more in depth to the technique and adds moves or addresses small details. This is the bulk of class and usually lasts 45 minutes.

DRILLS

No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) FAQs

Where can I train No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in McDonough, GA?

Independent MMA & Fitness offers adult No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training in McDonough, Georgia. Students can develop grappling, positional control, escapes, takedowns, and submissions without training in the traditional BJJ Gi.

What exactly is No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

No-Gi BJJ is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practiced without the traditional jacket and pants known as a Gi. Students typically train in athletic clothing such as a rash guard and grappling shorts while learning many of the same fundamental grappling concepts found in traditional BJJ.

Can a complete beginner start with No-Gi BJJ?

Yes. You don’t have to learn Gi Jiu-Jitsu first. Beginners can start directly with No-Gi and learn fundamental positions, movement, escapes, control, takedowns, and submissions as they gain experience.

What's the difference between Gi and No-Gi BJJ?

The biggest difference is the clothing and how you can grip your opponent. Gi BJJ allows you to use the Gi for grips and certain techniques, while No-Gi relies more heavily on controlling the body itself. Both styles teach grappling, positional control, escapes, and submissions.

Do I have to wear one of those Jiu-Jitsu uniforms for No-Gi?

No. That’s one of the defining differences of No-Gi BJJ. Students generally wear fitted athletic clothing designed for grappling rather than the traditional BJJ Gi.

What should I wear to my first No-Gi BJJ class?

A rash guard or fitted athletic shirt with athletic or grappling shorts is generally appropriate. Avoid clothing with exposed zippers, pockets, or anything that could catch on a training partner. Contact us before your first class if you’re unsure what to wear.

Is No-Gi BJJ more like wrestling than regular Jiu-Jitsu?

No-Gi BJJ can have significant crossover with wrestling, particularly with takedowns, scrambles, pressure, and controlling an opponent without relying on clothing grips. However, BJJ also places a major emphasis on submissions, positional strategy, and fighting effectively from the ground.

Do I need wrestling experience to be good at No-Gi BJJ?

No. Wrestling experience can certainly be useful, but it isn’t required. Students without a wrestling background can learn takedowns, positional control, movement, and other grappling skills as part of their training.

Is No-Gi BJJ good if I eventually want to learn MMA?

Yes. No-Gi grappling has a natural crossover with MMA because competitors aren’t wearing a traditional BJJ Gi. It can help you develop takedowns, escapes, positional control, submissions, and the ability to grapple without relying on clothing grips.

Is No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu good for self-defense?

No-Gi BJJ can teach practical grappling skills such as controlling positions, escaping bad situations, maintaining balance, and dealing with physical resistance. Real-world self-defense involves additional considerations, though, including awareness, de-escalation, striking, multiple people, and safely leaving the situation.

Am I going to get choked or put in submissions during my first class?

You’ll learn about submissions as part of BJJ, but beginners aren’t expected to know everything immediately. A major part of training is learning how to practice safely, recognize when you’re caught in a submission, and tap before an unnecessary injury occurs.

What does “tapping” mean in No-Gi BJJ?

Tapping is how you tell your training partner to immediately stop a submission or position. You can physically tap your partner or the mat, and verbal taps can also be used. Learning to tap early is a normal and important part of safe Jiu-Jitsu training. RESPECT THE TAP!

Is No-Gi BJJ harder because everyone gets sweaty and slippery?

As training progresses, No-Gi can become fast-paced and slippery because you don’t have a Gi to grab. That forces you to develop effective body positioning, pressure, hooks, grips, and control rather than depending on grabbing clothing.

Is No-Gi BJJ a good workout?

Yes. Grappling can challenge your cardiovascular endurance, strength, mobility, coordination, balance, and muscular stamina. Because you’re also solving problems and learning techniques against resistance, the workout can feel very different from traditional cardio or weight training.

Do I need to be strong to start No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu?

No. Strength can be useful in any physical sport, but BJJ is built around developing technique, leverage, positioning, timing, and control. Beginners should focus on learning how to move efficiently rather than trying to overpower every training partner.

Am I too old to start No-Gi BJJ?

You don’t have to start Jiu-Jitsu as a teenager or have an athletic background. Adults begin BJJ at many different ages. Your pace, training intensity, and goals can be adjusted based on your experience and physical capabilities.

Can I train both Gi and No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Yes. Many BJJ students train both because each style can develop different parts of their grappling. Independent MMA & Fitness offers classes across the week that allow you to train both styles. Training both can expose you to different grips, movements, strategies, and situations while strengthening your overall understanding of Jiu-Jitsu.

Can I try No-Gi BJJ before signing up for a membership?

Yes. New students can take advantage of our free trial at Independent MMA & Fitness of McDonough. It’s a chance to experience No-Gi training, meet the coaches, and see if Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is right for you before becoming a member.

I was pretty hesitant about learning jiu jitsu because I thought the atmosphere may be intimidating but I’m glad I pulled the trigger and went to Independent. Everyone in the class is very humble and welcoming. Its definitely a fun place to learn jiu jitsu and learn some stuff about yourself. I recommend everyone try it.

I came to Independent 3 years ago needing to make a change. I was 167 lbs and not happy. I started off in the cardio classes and lost 20 plus lbs. in my first couple months. Then another 20 lbs after doing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Not only did I lose the weight, but I also found confidence, and friendships that have truly become family. This gym is unlike any other!
